Saturday February 9 we are doing a Valentine's Day adoption promotion: Warm Hearts and Sloppy
Kisses...just encouraging folks to find a new love from among our cats and dogs. We will be giving
away a goody bag with each adoption, and the first three adopters get a pair of tickets to the
Rave Theater. If you would like a flyer to post at your office, let me know and I will forward it.
Birthday parties! 2/24; 3/2 and 3/16. I would love some help with these..especially anyone who
has good ideas on things to do with the kids. We can't play in the park when it's cold, and we are
a bit low on puppies and kittens to play with...I welcome suggestions and help! Lyn has bought
supplies to paint kerchiefs for the dogs again, and some to make cat toys. a Laura and Hayden
helped with a big group today, and the kids and animals had a great time. This was a "repeat"...
they'd had a party here before, and the two in March are also.
When taking more than one dog out to play, be sure they are dogs who get along well...you can ask
the staff person in their area for recommendations. And if you note any particular friendships
(or dislikes) among the dogs, please make a note of it and let staff know. We are going to try to
list a dog's "friends" on on it's cage. And please take only three or four at a time, and don't
leave them without someone watching them. And of course, never mix genders of unsterilized dogs.
(Just a few reminders!)
April 18/19 is Earth Day, and the Zoo has again invited us to set up with handouts and adoptables.
I know it is a long way off, but it would be great if we could organize something and do it. We
haven't done it for the past two years, but it would be nice to participate again. The dogs we
take always enjoy an outing.Erica has volunteered, and Leslie and her husband. Tell me which days
you can help. We'd love to have at least 8 people on Saturday, and will be happy for as many as we
can get on Friday!! We plan to have a book showing all of our adoptables, a poster for
Special Friends Sponsorships, and lots of adoptables in person (or "in dog?")
Our new Puppy Love Chairman is Leah Capel. She is setting up this year's schedule. If you would
like to join this group, or have questions, you can reach her at leahcapel@sbcglobal.net .
This is the schedule for February.
Feb. 9th: 9:30
Feb. 23rd: 10:00
And Mary and Leigh take puppies to a women's shelter every other Saturday. You can find out more
from Mary at mstephens@ashland.com
We have some cute Valentine's Day cards. If you make a donation to the shelter in the name of a
friend, loved one (or pet),and specify Valentine's day, we will send a card noting your donation
to the honoree. See our website for details. And be sure to tell us where to send it! Or you can
come to the shelter and get the cards yourself, and send them.
A few of our 2008 DayPlanners are still available! Check the website for locations
.
It's CFC (Combined Federal Campaign) time again! If you work for a federal agency, or know someone
who does, please consider making HSPC the charity of choice. Our number is 53272. And if your
agency would like us to do a presentation, Christine has already taken Abner the Basset mix to a
few places, and getting us lots of donations (we hope!)! She would be happy to make more visits.
Last year, we were pledged $22,000, more than any other agency in the area. This year, we really
are depending on donation such as this to meet our expenses.
Our Kroger cards made $556 for December... This is very low! Please remember to use them. You can
only purchase them at the shelter (or by mail); You can't buy them at Kroger , and using them does
not negate your Kroger Discount card, you can use both. If you don't know how they work, let me
know and I will explain this painless way to make money for the shelter. I just sent 50 more cards
to the shelter.
Volunteers: Think about taking dogs out to our wonderful dog park to play. They love it! And
please pick up after your dog..there are poop bags and buckets to put them in...and please remember
to put your dog back, or ask for help. And if you want help getting started, Susann will be happy
to meet you..you can contact her at szmaniasusannm@ uams.edu . I've seen some of our new volunteer
s jumping right in...we appreciate it, and the animals really do!!
If you would like to be part of our dog training program..learn to train our shelter dogs to help
make them more adoptable... and give them a chance to have fun..contact Phyllis at
phyllisnewt@ hotmail.com and she will tell you when the next set of classes will start. This is
a wonderful program that has helped get so many of our dogs into good homes. Both the dogs and the
trainers learn new skills! New programs will be starting up shortly.
We have a wonderful Humane Ed program. Christine has become a Certified Humane Educator, and does
programs at schools, churches, scout groups., schools, libraries. She has age-appropriate materials
for all groups, and does a wonderful job teaching about animal care, responsibility, spay/neuter,
etc. She brings puppies with her,(and our Humane Ed mascot, Abner..a real, live Beagle Daschound
mix) to make it interesting to everyone! If you would like her to come to your organization, or
would like to help her, let me know and I will put you in touch.
Adoptions: Onyx; Jasmine; Kozy; Tabbi (a dog!), Louise, and Queenie (cat), Gizmo, and some puppies
