JUNE 26,2002

Our annual meeting and picnic was interesting. Many volunteers came out to enjoy the day, and to confirm our current Board, Officers, and policies. It was nice to see so many of our volunteers and their "personal" animals, and to reaffirm our commitment to being a true "no-kill shelter".

There are Certificates of Appreciation at the front desk for volunteers who did not get one at the picnic.

This Spring has been exceptional in that there have been even more abandoned kittens and puppies than ever. HSPC has never been so full. Thanks to our volunteers and foster families, we have been able to take in and save a huge number of animals, mostly mothers with litters, who had no where else to go.

Our drive to get 70,000 signatures on petitions to make animal abuse a felony in Arkansas has been successful-we now have 77,000 signatures, and are hoping for 80,000 before the drive is over this weekend. Now the issue will go on the ballot, and the people of Arkansas can vote to make it law. But--it's not over yet- this only gets it on the ballot -we still have to get out and vote for it in November.

Our website, (www.warmhearts.org), long out-of-date--is being updated, and now features animals currently available for adoption. Also, it is now featuring current news, events, needs and special features. We are working on a "Special Needs Animals" feature for next week, to show off some of our wonderful dogs and cats who have special requirements.

Our computer situation is slowly improving and soon everything at the Humane Society will be completely computerized and integrated. We are selecting our new equipment this week, and will soon need help with data entry. There will be a lot of paperwork to catch up with.

Our last-minute Adoptathon at McCain Mall this past Saturday resulted in nine adoptions! We'll be doing that again!

Linda Laughlin, well-known dog trainer-is working several days a week with twelve of our dogs to help them become more adoptable. They are loving the special attention.

HSPC will soon be opening an off-site adoption center at University Mall, to make it even more convenient to adopt an HSPC animal.

Several parties, and group visits by Scouts and church groups are scheduled, and we always need a few volunteers to supervise . Arkansas Family Life has given us a nice listing as a place to have birthday parties, so we expect several more will be scheduled before long. These are wonderful public relations events, bring in nice presents for the animals, and increase humane awareness. (And usually result in a few adoptions and new volunteers!)

Lots of new events pop up every day; there will be a Puppy Love Training Session soon, as well as a Therapy Dog Training Session, and a Disaster Relief Training Session is also coming up. I will send out notices as soon as I have details.
