It is a sad fact that millions of homeless animals are euthanized in shelters each year. In Little Rock alone, over 3,500 dogs and cats were put down last year at the city shelter because they couldn't find a home or were surrendered by their owners.
In an effort to remember those who lost their lives in shelters throughout the country, Saturday, August 17 has been designated National Homeless Animal Day. There will be a Candlelight Vigil in remembrance of these animals at Burns Park, on August 17, following a 7PM program on Dog and Cat Overpopulation, organized by Helping Hands for Little Paws. There will also be a Wall of Remembrance with photographs of many of those who died at Little Rock Animal Control. The event is meant to bring awareness to the problem of pet overpopulation, and to promote spaying and neutering. |
