We have cleared the dogs out of the conference room, and City Year volunteers are spackling, repairing drywall, sanding and painting on Monday. It looked better already! So we have scheduled some birthday parties! So far, they are Sundays 1/27; 2/3; and 2/24. I would love some help with these..especially anyone who has good ideas on things to do with the kids. I welcome suggestions and help! I plan to buy supplies to paint kerchiefs for the dogs again, (as well as a wall protector!), but anything else would be considered. They seem to be mostly girls, and these three groups are in the 8-10 range.

Brad Rodgers is forming a committee to develop and promote adoption events for the shelter. He will be setting up a meeting very soon. We have had a wonderful response to this project... it's still not to late to sign on if you are interested.Brad will be sending an email announcing the meeting in a few days!

Our new Puppy Love Chairman is Leah Capel. She is setting up this year's schedule. If you would like to join this group, or have questions, you can reach her at leahcapel@sbcglobal.net

Super Suppers will donate 10% to the Humane Society. These are the January dates:The NLR Store will donate on the 10th, 15th & 21st. . The customer must let them know that they are buying to help the shelter in order for the money to be donated.

We have some cute Valentine's Day cards. If you make a donation to the shelter in the name of a friend, loved one (or pet),and specify Valentine's day, we will send a card noting your donation to the honoree. See our website for details. And be sure to tell us where to send it!

A few of our 2008 DayPlanners are still available! Check the website for location,

. It's CFC (Combined Federal Campaign) time again! If you work for a federal agency, or know someone who does, please consider making HSPC the charity of choice. Our number is 53272. And if your agency would like us to do a presentation, Christine has already taken Abner the Basset mix to a few places, and getting us lots of donations (we hope!)! She would be happy to make more visits. Last year, we were pledged $22,000, more than any other agency in the area. This year, we really are depending on donation such as this to meet our expenses.

Our Kroger cards made $556 for December... This is very low! Please remember to use them. You can only purchase them at the shelter (or by mail); You can't buy them at Kroger , and using them does not negate your Kroger Discount card, you can use both. If you don't know how they work, let me know and I will explain this painless way to make money for the shelter. I just sent 50 more cards to the shelter.

Volunteers: Think about taking dogs out to our wonderful dog park to play. They love it! And please pick up after your dog..there are poop bags and buckets to put them in...and please remember to put your dog back, or ask for help. And if you want help getting started, Susann will be happy to meet you..you can contact her at szmaniasusannm@ uams.edu . I've seen some of our new volunteers jumping right in...we appreciate it, and the animals really do!!

If you would like to be part of our dog training program..learn to train our shelter dogs to help make them more adoptable... and give them a chance to have fun..contact Phyllis at phyllisnewt@ hotmail.com and she will tell you when the next set of classes will start. This is a wonderful program that has helped get so many of our dogs into good homes. Both the dogs and the trainers learn new skills! New programs will be starting up shortly.

We have a wonderful Humane Ed program. Christine has become a Certified Humane Educator, and does programs at schools, churches, scout groups., schools, libraries. She has age-appropriate materials for all groups, and does a wonderful job teaching about animal care, responsibility, spay/neuter, etc. She brings puppies with her,(and our Humane Ed mascot, Abner..a real, live Beagle Daschound mix) to make it interesting to everyone! If you would like her to come to your organization, or would like to help her, let me know and I will put you in touch.

Adoptions: Nixon; Beverly; Chloe; Tux;Echo; Spot;Jacqueline; Raggedy Ann and lots of puppies and kittens

Next volunteer orientation: Monday January 21 at 6:15PM at the shelter. And check our website www.warmhearts . org. I add new animals every Sunday night. And even more of our animals can be seen on Petfinder.com
