HSPC EVENTS HSPC Week 5/24/04

Saturday, 5/29/04 - Whiskers at the MallWill be closed today. Most of the store volunteers will be on vacation, or otherwise occupied. The shelter will be open for adoptions, and Whiskers will reopen June5.

We had our annual membership meeting and picnic yesterday at Burns Park. We voted in our Board, and added long-time volunteer Richard Morgan. Our officers remain as President: Lyn Owens; VP Steve Schulte; Secretary: Debbie Howell; Treasurer: Debbie Love; members: Phyllis Newton, Nancy Thaden, Laurel Lawrence, Gene Mullins and Richard Morgan. Judith Zinser has resigned after many years of service.

Ann Linton was named Volunteer of the Year.

Sunday May 23, 10:30 PM Shelter Manager Kay Jordan's rescue of Odie was shown much later in the evening. We turned off the TV around 11, but left the tape running. When we checked this morning, it had been shown, but much later. We have an official copy, and would be happy to show it at the shelter, if anyone wants to see it. Its pretty impressive. And Odie is recovering happily in a wonderful foster home. He will be adoptable soon.

Kitten from the Drug Bust - I have a picture or two of Maggie, the kitten Kay rescued from a steel trap (that turned into a drug and weapons bust). She is on the website, under shelter cats Maggie. She is a precious little kitty, and she has been through so much in her little life. We need to find her the most loving home in the world when she is ready.

Sunday May 30, - the Asbury United Methodist Church on Napa Valley is having a Blessing of the Animals. The children have made goody bags for the animals, and they would love for us to bring some puppies (and kitties). The service runs from 9:45 to 10:30. They will let me know later this week if we should be there before or after. Toby is going, but another volunteer or two would be great.

Saturday June 5 -Dog Wash at Trinity United Methodist Church. As always, need lots of help!!

And, same time, same place--June 5, at TrinityTrinity is having a Big Yard Sale. Trinity has generously offered us a space, and we have plenty of items left over from our own sale last year. Ann has offered to sort and tag, but we need someone to transport it and set up. Mary will be there to help with sales. We could really use one or two more, and Im sure Ann would like some help sorting and tagging. Let me know if you can help.

And Saturday, June 5 is the Dance for the Animals, a benefit/concert of classical Indian Dance, at the newly renovated M. L. Harris Auditorium at Philander Smith College. Proceeds will benefit HSPC and a shelter in India, Jeev Raksha Animal Welfare Trust. Check the website www.danceforanimals.org. This should be a wonderful cultural experience. We will need a few volunteers to sell tickets, and usher. Or just come and see the show. Tell your friends!

Our first Travs game is June 9. We usually have three dog escorts. Jennifer and John will be taking a dog or two. Melissa has offered, and also Robin, so I think we are good for this one. Next one is August 13

Wednesday June 23 Underground Pub. 5-9PM. Admission of $5, a percentage of sales, and proceeds from various promotions go to HSPC. Good music, food, drinks available. Bring your friends down to have fun and help HSPC!!! We made a lot of money at this last year, and a lot of HSPC folks got together and had a great evening! Lets do even better this year!

Reigning Cats and Dogs Rescheduled for October 16. Let me know if you want to help--either at the event, or soliciting auction items and/or sponsorships.

We still have some Kroger cards to sell--and we want to order more. If you know anyone who wants one, let me know. And remind everyone to use them!! They don't help us if they aren't used! We get our first check once the total purchases of everyone who has an HSPC card reaches $5000. I'll let you know when that happens, and it should be soon. And I'll let you know in a year how much it brings us. We have high hopes! ANDI have been asked if you can use them over and overand you canyou can refill them with money and keep using them foreveror at least until Kroger turns it off!

Don't forget our Puppy Love program; lots of places would love to have us visit. If you are interested in getting started, contact Patty Jorwall at: pjorwall@swbell.net

All day, every day---help is needed at the shelter - walking, bathing, playing with the dogs and cats of HSPC. The more time you spend with them, the more adoptable they become. You dont need to schedule a timeif you have some time available, just come on down. Were open 11-6 every day, and until 8PM Mondays and Fridays.

Adoptions: Simone; Starly; Elisa*; Wilona; Janus; Ward; Arabella; Sunshine; Gandolf; Richie*; Dixie; Ember; Daisy Girl; Arlee (*= long-time shelter resident)

New Volunteers: Melissa LeCrone; Margaret Newton; Kim Heine; and Stacy Spinks will be our Summer Intern.

And I could use a foster home for a 4 week old kitten, and a foster or permanent home for a 20 pound Siamese mix,(!) and an Irish Wolfhound. The shelter is more than full right now, and these guys were abandoned.

Let me know what you want to help with---its a busy time for HSPC volunteers!
