HSPC EVENTS 5/17/04

We made $975 at our first Kroger Dog Wash. We washed lots of dogs, sold lots of Kroger cards, and got some donations. Plus, we had fun. Thanks to volunteers Ann, Judy and her wonderful Girl Scouts (please come again, girls!), Melissa, Billye and Stoney, Mary, Justin and Jessica, Kent...and I'm sure there were others. Thank you all for your help.

Good News!! We have been accepted to be part of the Combined Federal Campaign/United Way payroll deduction charitable giving program. If your company is part of this program, be sure to specify HSPC. I'll get our number for you.

And...if your company has opportunities for agencies such as HSPC to come and give a program, we have a wonderful 8 minute film, plus volunteers who will come speak, and even bring animals. If there is a chance for us to do any of this, please let me know and I will arrange it from our end.

A dog transport is needed to transport a Flat-coated Retriever and her pups from LRAS to Memphis, in various legs of the trip. If you are interested, the email is tierbee@aol.com.

Actually, she is going all the way to NY, but there are several legs of her journey through here. She is coming from Little Rock Animal Shelter and going to the Little Shelter www.littleshelter.com - This is not an HSPC dog, but we like to help.

Saturday, 5/22/04 Whiskers at the Mall--our offsite adoption center and storewe need help 10-4, and transporting animals. If you can help, contact Chris Ellis at dcellis@uams.edu. Also, we need help Friday night bathing animals and getting them ready. The staff really appreciates the help Friday night.

Saturday May 22--Birthday party at the shelter, 2PM; we don't usually do them on Saturday, but this is a special situation. (Our picnic is on Sunday). We'll need some volunteers to help the kids with the animals.

Sunday, May 23--HSPC membership meeting and picnic. Burns Park, Pavilion 2, 1PM...

We're keeping it simple this year--bring your own lunch, bring your kids, bring your dogs. This is a good opportunity for HSPC volunteers and members to get together. Take the Burns Park exit from Rte 40, and follow the signs toward Funland. It is the same place as last year. We may take a few HSPC dogs for "a day in the park". If you would like to escort a shelter dog, let me know.

Sunday May 23, 10:30 PM Shelter Manager Kay Jordan's rescue of Odie, the little pup who fell down a 62' pipe, will be featured on Animal Rescues PAX (KYPX), Channel 20. Be sure to watch. It should be the first 20 minutes of the show. There is also an article about it in todays D-G, page B1, Paper Trails.

Sunday May 30, the Asbury United Methodist Church on Napa Valley is having a Blessing of the Animals, and would like us to bring a few dogs., and give us a donation It is at 10AM. Toby is going, and perhaps another volunteer could go, too.

And Saturday, June 5 is the Dance for the Animals, a concert of classical Indian Dance. Proceeds will benefit HSPC and a similar shelter in India, Jeev Raksha. Check the website www.danceforanimals.org. This should be a wonderful cultural experience. We will need a few volunteers to sell tickets, and usher. Or just come and see the show.

Our first Travs game is June 9. We usually need three dog escorts. Jennifer and John will be taking a dog or two. Anyone else?

We still have some Kroger cards to sell--and we want to order more. If you know anyone who wants one, let me know. And remind everyone to use them!! They don't help us if they aren't used! We get our first check once the total purchases of everyone who has an HSPC card reaches $5000. I'll let you know when that happens, and it should be soon. And I'll let you know in a year how much it brings us. We have high hopes!

Don't forget our Puppy Love program; lots of places would love to have us visit. If you are interested in getting started, contact Patty Jorwall at: pjorwall@swbell.net

At the Shelter - All day, every day---help is needed walking, bathing, playing with the dogs and cats of HSPC. The more time you spend with them, the more adoptable they become.

Adoptions: Porgy; Shorty; Mimi; Angie; Cora; lots of puppies; lots of kittens
