NEWS AND EVENTS
HSPC Events 5/23/05
We had a busy dog wash, considering we had a lot of competing events going on. We made $847, and met some lovely dogs. Thanks to Justin and Jessica, Debbie H, Margie, Gene, Linda, Kent, and Pat Page and her Girl Scouts. Former volunteer Amanda, who now lives in New York, stopped by and washed some dogs.
We say a sad goodby to volunteer Judy Bruns, who is moving to Texas tomorrow, and taking JaLo with her. Judy was at the shelter almost every day, helping Kay wth abuse calls, Vickie with clinic work, cleaning, transporting, and caring for our animals, who will miss her, too.
Saturday May 28 - Whiskers at the Mall will be closed
Saturday June 4 - Dog Wash at Trinity. We need lots of help; we especially need help at 8:30, when we are setting up. It is a lot of work for the two of us.
Our annual meeting/picnic will be June 5 at 1PM at Burns Park. Bring a lunch--drinks will be provided. Bring your kids, dogs...help elect officers. Come on out and meet other volunteers.
Sunday June 12 - Birthday party at the shelter Need help with that, too
We could use some help with
lawn care. We lost the underwriter for the lawn service, so we need to do it ourselves, probably every two weeks. Perhaps a few people could work out a rotating schedule.Call Kay at the shelter to set up a schedule.
Puppy Love - We still need more volunteers for Puppy Love. Christina would like to schedule more visits. This is something you can do with your kids! You can contact Christina for more information at:
ramseyresources@aol.com - Her phone # is 766-6662.
Saturday, June 4 - Whiskers at the MallContact Chris if you can help.
Ellischris@uams.edu
Day Planner - If you want to have your pets picture in our 2006 Dayplanner, let me know and I will send you a page purchase form We are limiting the number of pages, so it will be first come; last year we had to turn folks away! We also have updated information on the Warm Hearts website,
www.warmhearts.org, under the topic "Community" - DEADLINE 6/1
Fosters - We are still looking for some short-term fosters for some of our animals that would benefit from time away from the shelter (who wouldnt). Some time spent in a loving home might increase confidence and social skills, and make them more adoptable. If you are interested, or have any questions, let me know. One of our volunteers has been taking one of our long-timers on outings and overnights, and it will make this shy, scared dog adoptable.
****Update--after 6 years in the shelter, she (Cecilia) has been adopted. She has gone to live with her sister, who was adopted 3 years ago, and o ur volunteer is working with another long-timer..
One of our volunteers has put racks with
poop bags by each door. Please take some and pick up after the dogs you walk! Now that it is nice weather, people will be spending more time outdoors with the animals. Lets all help keep it clean!
Tell us when the dogs are walked - There are little notebooks and pens on every dog/puppy cage at the shelter. If you walk a dog, please note the date/time on the notepad. It will help get more dogs walked more often, if volunteers can see who has been walked when.
In anticipation of our
5 years anniversary at our new building, in September, we want to make the shelter look as good as we can. Over the next few months, please let me know of any items you see needing repair (we know about broken cage locks), and also if you---or someone you know---might be willing to donate some time to helping make repairs. Some large-scale painting is definitely on the list!
There will be an
EARS Workshop on June 25 in NLR. The cost is $85, but if five or more go as a group, it is $70. --Emergency Animal Rescue Service . This is training on what to do in a disaster.
HSPC has a Disaster Plan, and will be looking for people to be available to implement it in an emergency. This training is not mandatory, but should be helpful to people seriously interested in disaster/emergency efforts. If you are interested, I will get the form to you. Registration ends 6/11.It is not held in LR very often.
