NEWS AND EVENTS

HSPC Events 7/18/05

Volunteers, remember that you are all ambassadors for the Humane Society. Please remind everyone you know that:
  • We are a no-kill shelter.
  • We receive no money from the city, state or other organization.
  • We are solely supported by donations, fundraisers, and bequests.
  • We provide veterinary care for every animal that comes in to our shelter. Some times the care is extensive, and our bills are staggering.
  • We investigate and help prosecute animal abuse.
  • We have many community outreach programs , such as Puppy Love, and Humane Ed
  • We need help maintaining all this.
  • We need to get the word out, and to let folks know who WE are, and what we do.

Saturday July 16- Our Dog Wash at Kroger made $616..thanks to Gene, Billye, Lucy; Denise, Justin, Debbie, Margie,Karen, and Susann.

Saturday July 23-- Whiskers at the Mall. If you want to help at our mall store, contact Chris at ellischris@uams.edu.

Saturday July 23--Dog wash is NLR--6501 JFK. Contact Mary at mmstephens@ashland.com.

Our trainer, Linda Laughlin, is leaving us after many years. Linda and her helpers worked with 12 dogs at a time, teaching them adoptable ways--to walk on a leash, sit, stay... and she helped so many of our dogs get wonderful homes. If any of our volunteers have experience with training, and would like to work with a few of our animals at a time, please let me know. I will put you in touch with folks who can work with you to set up a program.

Also, volunteers, think about helping with adoptions. More animals get adopted if the potential adopters get personal attention. Helping with adoptions is my favorite thing to do, but I am not there all the time. If you like seeing our dogs and cats going to wonderful homes, and would like to help with adoptions, let me know, and I will be happy to get you started

Pizza Hut is helping again this year. HSPC will get 20% of sales on Monday nights from 5-9. However, this year, a voucher needs to be turned in when the pizza is ordered ( or picked up). You can download them from our website , or pick up some at the shelter, the Mall store, or a dog wash. Or I can email you some to print out.

Saturday August 6--Dog Wash at Trinity. John and I will be out of town,; please help Karen and Susann.

It is our hope to get a playground built for our dogs. We have been working on this for a long time. KAren and Susann have designed a play area that should offer the dogs a great place to play, and enhance the appearance of our property. We have filed for a building permit, and have passed the first review. The final hearing will be before the planning commission August 16, at 6PM.Neighbors who might be against it will have the opportunity to come and speak. Please consider coming to show your support of this improvement to our shelter, and to the lives of our resident dogs.. I will have more details as to place, etc next week.

A reminder --if you have an HSPC Kroger Gift card, don't forget to use it! And we have some more, if you know anyone who wants one.

We still need help with landscaping. If you have a mower, and could cut our grass, it would save having to pay a lawn service. This is especially important right now when we are so short of funds.

Puppy Love---We still need more volunteers for Puppy Love. Christina would like to schedule more visits. You can contact Christina for more information at ramseyresources@aol.com or call her at 766-6662. Christina has a lot of peple on her list, but is having a hard time getting teams together for visits. This is something you can do with your kids!

Fosters - We are still looking for some short-term fosters for some of our animals that would benefit from time away from the shelter (who wouldnt). Some time spent in a loving home might increase confidence and social skills, and make them more adoptable. If you are interested, or have any questions, let me know.

Adoptions: lots of kittens and puppies

New Volunteers: Joan, Steve and Maggie Beestra;Tresa Butler; Julie and Josh Mullenax; Lisa Mitchell; Shanna Morris; Ashish Lohani;Denise Burnett;Tara Sims; Andrea, Anthony and Matthew Ossenfort.

Next volunteer orientation: July 25, 6:30 PM at the shelter.
