NEWS AND EVENTS

HSPC Events 6/13/05

As you know, HSPC took in over 40 small dogs in an abuse/puppy mill case. We have been caring for these little dogs for several weeks. Because it is a pending court case, we can't adopt them, or even put them in foster care.

But these little fellows and girls really need to get out and get some fresh air and excercise. They are not leash-trained. If you would consider coming down and taking them out for a few minutes, that will mean so much to them.

They will have to be carried (no big deal; the biggest of them is probably under 5 pounds!), perhaps to the puppy pen, and introduced to grass, toys, etc. They bark a lot when you come into their room, but they are all very friendly, and love to be held. If you want to do this, ask Julie or Christina to show them to you. If any shelter visitors see them and ask about them, the answer is: they are part of a pending court case, and are not available for adoption.

We could use a short term foster for a small Corgi-type dog. He will be getting his shots today, and we'd rather she were somewhere else while they "take". He is very sweet, neutered, healthy - even has clean teeth!. I have a photo if you are interested.

Saturday June 19 - Whiskers at the Mall -if you can help, contact Chris at Ellischris@uams.edu

Saturday June18 --Dog Wash at Kroger. Karen and Susann will be running this one for us. Please come out and help them.

Reigning Meeting - There will be a kick-off meeting for Reigning Cats and Dogs on Monday, June 20, at 6PM, tentatively at the Buffalo Grille downtown. If you are interested in helping plan this event, and/or soliciting sponsorships and auction items, this is the time to sign on, so make a note of the date. If you want to help at the event itself, we will be asking for that help later on., and you don't need to attend this meeting.

Pizza Hut is again going to help HSPC. From July 4 to Sept 26, we will get 20% of sales on Monday nights from 5-9. However, this year, a voucher needs to be turned in when the pizza is ordered (or picked up). You can download them from our website, or pick up some at the shelter, the Mall store, or a dog wash.

Tuesday June 14 - Paws and Claws, the Humane Ed club, will be having their awards/recognition dinner Tuesday, 6/14, 7PM at El Chico on Rodney Parham. It would be great to have some HSPC folks join them and encourage their efforts.

Workshop Cancelled - The Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) has cancelled their training session in Little Rock.

Kroger Cards - We just got 50 more Kroger cards; they are at the shelter, and some will be at the store, if you know any one who wants one.

Lawn Help - We could use some help with lawn care. We lost the underwriter for the lawn service, so we need to do it ourselves, probably every two weeks. Perhaps a few people could work out a rotating schedule.Call Kay at the shelter to set up a schedule. Katy has donated a lawn mower.

Puppy Love---We still need more volunteers for Puppy Love. Christina would like to schedule more visits. This is something you can do with your kids! You can contact Christina for more information at: ramseyresources@aol.com Her phone number is 766-6662.

Short Term Foster Homes - We are still looking for some short-term fosters for some of our animals that would benefit from time away from the shelter (who wouldnt). Some time spent in a loving home might increase confidence and social skills, and make them more adoptable. If you are interested, or have any questions, let me know.

Happy Birthday Cheeky - The Box Turtle in Hillcrest is having a birthday party for the resident pooch, Cheeky, on June 18, 1-4. There will be wine and cheese, cake, various pet-related items, and some of the proceeds of the day will come to HSPC. Come wish Cheeky a happy birthday--he is a beautiful big dog.

Adoptions: Marigold; Chancy; Shirley, Michele S;Marijean, and Roseanna, the dog on TV SAturday, plus lots of kittens and puppies.

New Volunteers: Katie and Chris Stone

Next volunteer orientation: July 11, 6:30 PM at the shelter

Upcoming Events:
