Puppy Mill Case - As you know, HSPC tool in over 40 small dogs in an abuse/puppy mill case. We have been caring for these little dogs for several weeks. Because it is a pending court case, we can't adopt them, or even put them in foster care. But we feel these little fellows and girls really need to get out and get some fresh air and excercise. They are not leash-trained.
If you would consider coming down and taking them out for a few minutes, that will mean so much to them. They will have to be carried (no big deal; the biggest of them is probably under 5 pounds!), perhaps to the puppy pen, and introduced to grass, toys, etc. They bark a lot when you come into their room, but they are all very friendly, and love to be held. If you want to do this, ask Julie or Christina to show them to you. If any shelter visitors see them and ask about them, the answer is: they are part of a pending court case, and are not available for adoption.
Saturday June 11 - Whiskers at the Mall---if you can help, contact Chris at
Ellischris@uams.edu
Saturday June 4 - Dog Wash at Trinity.
Our dog wash made $935. Thanks to Kristina and Stew, Karen and Susann, Justin and Jessica, Jim and Jessica, Margie, Gene, John, and three volunteers from Americorp.
John and I will be out of town for the
June 18 Dog Wash at Kroger. We need someone to take over for us. You will need to come to our house before we leave (Friday 6/17), and get tubs, hoses, tents, etc. You will need a truck or SUV. Also someone to pick up the chairs, table and towels at the shelter by Friday night, and get it all to Kroger in time to have it set up before 9AM. Someone will also have to return these things to my house (or keep them at yours until we get back) and the shelter when it is over. Our house is in West Little Rock. Volunteers--please think about helping at this dog wash
Our
annual meeting/picnic was held SundayJune 5 at 1PM at Burns Park. We reeelcted our officers and Board of Directors. Chris Ellis was given an award for his work at Whiskers at the Mall, and Ruth Vanderveen was honored for her many years of wonderful service to the animals,
Sunday June 12---Birthday party at the shelter Need help with that. Hayden has volunteered to help.
Tuesday June 14--Paws and Claws, the Humane Ed club, will be having their awards/recognition dinner Tuesday, 6/14, 7PM at El Chico on Rodney Parham. It would be great to have some HSPC folks join them and encourage their efforts.
The Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) training is $50 if we get 5 or more participants, $70 if not. (This is a correction om what I wrote previously) Karen and Alyssa are going. Anyone else? HSPC has a well-organized Disaster plan, and will be looking for people to sign up for it shortly.
Kroger Cards - We just got
50 more Kroger cards; they are at the shelter, and some will be at the store, if you know any one who wants one.
Help with the Lawn - We could use some help with lawn care. We lost the underwriter for the lawn service, so we need to do it ourselves, probably every two weeks. Perhaps a few people could work out a rotating schedule.Call Kay at the shelter to set up a schedule. Katy has donated a lawn mower.
Puppy Love---We still need more volunteers for Puppy Love. Christina would like to schedule more visits. This is something you can do with your kids! You can contact Christina for more information at:
ramseyresources@aol.com Her phone # is 766-6662.
Transport Little Rock to Denver - A disabled Golden Retreiver need a ride to his forever home in Denver. He is mobile, and friendly. If anyone is driving anywhere near there soon, lert me know and I will put you in touch. The legs of the trip have not yet been worked out.
Transport Baton Rouge to Little Rock - There is an LSU vet student who has rescued a female dog, 40 pounds, she was hit by a car and needs to get her to Little Rock asap. Can anyone help?
*We are still looking for some
short-term fosters for some of our animals that would benefit from time away from the shelter (who wouldnt). Some time spent in a loving home might increase confidence and social skills, and make them more adoptable. If you are interested, or have any questions, let me know.
The Box Turtle in HIllcrest is having a birthday party for the resident pooch, Cheeky, on June 18, 1-4. There will be wine and cheese, cake, various pet-related items, and some of the proceeds of the day will come to HSPC.
