Sam(Licorice) There is an adorable little black puppy on our website, under "featured dogs" and "special needs". His name was Licorice, and he is blind. He also has some neurological damage, and sometimes walked in circles, or had difficulty standing up. Sometimes not. Licorice, now Sam, has been adopted by a mother and daughter team of Volunteers/Warm Hearts. They'd like to share their story.

First of all I would like to thank you for suggesting fostering, that made a world of difference. I went in knowing that If I couldn't handle him that there was no pressure. I could bring him back. Thank God that wasn't the case. We did change his name to Sam (I AM). He is a loving handful.

He has adjusted well to his new home and so have we adjusted to him. Everyday he shows me something new that he can do. At first he was very quiet and didn't move around much but he has certainly learned how to make his presence known. Sam doesn't bark much, only when there is a sound that is repetitive. Like chopping or knocking. He loves his backyard and for a pup that can't see well he can really book around the yard. Sam's favorite part of the day are the two times he eats.

Fostering Sam gave me the opportunity to observe him, to see if I did take him on, if I would be able to handle him. The fact that after awhile he could find his water and food bowls helped me realize that he could retain thought. And if that were the case, he could learn. That was what my decision was based on. We are working on going outside. This might take a little time but he is only 4 mos. He has his good days and bad. He plays like any other pup with the exception that he can't see very well so he pounces on nothing and fights with the air but it's great to see that he is having a good time.

I have been in contact with Linda Laughlin , the trainer, and she gave me some background as to what she was doing with Sam before he left. She was also gracious in allowing us to bring Sam in on the days that she is there to help in his physical therapy. I will take her up on that. I know that it will take time for Sam to reach his full potential and I will do whatever it takes to help him ; we are in this for the long haul.

I realize that not everyone is willing to take a chance on a special needs, I didn't think I would consider it , but I'm so glad I did. He is so full of love and every moment of mopping and taking him outside and playing and correcting is so worth it.
